Lagrangian Coherent Structures

چکیده
Mounting evidence suggests that fluid advection can effectively be studied by considering special material surfaces, which are referred to here as Lagrangian coherent structures (LCSs). What makes these material surfaces special is their distinguished attracting or repelling nature. Notably, LCS are often locally the most strongly attracting or repellingmaterial surfaces in theflow, and as such have a strong influence on the flow topology. In fact, by understanding their evolution, one can often reveal mechanisms that underly complex laminar, and even turbulent, fluid transport in conspicuous detail. Conceptually, LCS can be approached from the dynamical systems perspective, or from amore physically based fluidmechanics perspective. Starting from the former, we note that fluid advection is described by the equation

Visualizing Lagrangian Coherent Structures and Comparison to Vector Field Topology
This paper takes a look at the visualization side of vector field analysis based on Lagrangian coherent structures. The Lagrangian coherent structures are extracted as height ridges of finite-time Lyapunov exponent fields. The resulting visualizations are compared to those from traditional instantaneous vector field topology of steady and unsteady vector fields. The examination is applied to th...
متن کاملSpace-Time Bifurcation Lines for Extraction of 2D Lagrangian Coherent Structures
We present a novel and efficient technique to extract Lagrangian coherent structures in two-dimensional time-dependent vector fields. We show that this can be achieved by employing bifurcation line extraction in the space-time representation of the vector field, and generating space-time bifurcation manifolds therefrom. To show the utility and applicability of our approach, we provide an evalua...
متن کاملHierarchical Watershed Ridges for Visualizing Lagrangian Coherent Structures
Lagrangian coherent structures provide insight into unsteady fluid flow, but their construction has posed many challenges. These structures can be characterized as ridges of a field, but their local definition utilizes an ambiguous eigenvector direction which can point in one of two directions, and its disambiguation can lead to noise and other problems. We overcome these issues with an applica...
متن کاملDynamically Consistent Lagrangian Coherent Structures
In this paper, we compute coherent structures based on radar data collected in Monterey Bay during August 2001 and August 2003. The Lagrangian structures are extracted from a finitetime Lyapunov exponent field. In contrast with earlier approaches, the integration time used in computing the Lyapunov exponents is not constant but adapts to the timescales of the different flow regimes present in t...
متن کاملLagrangian coherent structures and mixing in two-dimensional turbulence
We introduce a Lagrangian definition for the boundaries of coherent structures in two-dimensional turbulence. The boundaries are defined as material lines that are linearly stable or unstable for longer times than any of their neighbors. Such material lines are responsible for stretching and folding in the mixing of passive tracers. We derive an analytic criterion that can be used to extract co...
